We are delighted to announce the prize winners of the 2024 Competition
1st – Festival of the Hills for piano duo – Borimir Ivanov (aged 16) Tiffin School
2nd – A Slice of Fun for piano duo – Jamaal Kashim (aged 16) homeschooled + Royal College of Music Junior Department
3rd – Festival Rhythms for piano duo – Oscar Trott (aged 17) RGS Guildford
The winning composition was performed at the Festival’s concert on 16 May at The Menuhin Hall at which the competition prizes were presented.
The entries were assessed anonymously by the competition jury: Wu Qian (pianist and SHIMF Artistic Director), Huw Watkins (composer of the Festival’s 15th-anniversary commission Three Caprices), Steven Goss (composer and Head of Composition at the University of Surrey) and Natalie Klouda (violinist and composer).
As well as presenting world-class performances across the Surrey Hills region each year, the Festival is deeply committed to encouraging and inspiring young people to appreciate and become involved in music-making, be it as performers, composers, or audience members. The success of this competition clearly demonstrates that there is a wealth of talent and enthusiasm for classical music thriving in our local schools today.
